Altered Data as the result of the installation of Ad & Pop-up Blocking and Internet Security programs

01/12/06
A New Customer reported "Missing Links" (AD Nos. not show on the HTML page) while using Norton Security 2005.
The Control Panel in Norton Security 2005 is somewhat different than earlier versions. And the solution is also apparently different.
Ad Blocking is in the Spam Blocking area, but we now believe that turning it off does not help. Instead, turn off "Pop Up" Blocking,
and the AD Links should reappear. The Symantec (Norton) Technical Staff is making some progress in putting us (airresearch.com)
in their "built-in" exclusion list, which will obviate the problem in all cases. See the Jan. 30, 2004 note below.
In some versions of Norton Security, the following will allow the "Ad" links from The Aviation DataBase (airresearch.com);
Open Norton Internet Security-> click Ad Blocking-> Configure-> Advanced-> Add Site. Enter "airresearch.com", then click OK

Or--Use this Link to display the Norton instructions to disable Ad Blocking and/or Pop-up Blocking.

A Customer reported a Blank Page (or a page with only the Heading displayed) when selecting the "MS- Word" option for displaying the
AD Compliance Report. He was not using any Symantec (Norton) security product. He had two other Anti-Virus/Security products,
one was STOPZilla, a suite of Internet Security features including Ad Blocking. When he turned STOPZilla OFF (which was easy to do),
the MS-Word page displayed correctly. The Tech Staff at STOPZilla could not reproduce the problem. If you are using STOPZilla,
it can be turned ON and OFF quickly to avoid the problem and then reengage it's security features.

We have been tracking a small problem in the Compliance Report DOC file display for several weeks
and now have a sufficient understanding of it to provide a quick solution.
The problem only exists with large AD Summaries; over 100 ADs with the 5-line report and over 200 ADs with the 2-line report;
and that, for the most part, is limited to Large Aircraft; Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and Airbus, etc..
There is something in the Norton Internet Security system that does not like a DOC file in this form that is over a Megabyte.
If you are preparing a Compliance Report with more that 100 ADs and you get a blank page; turn off Norton Internet Security
and request the report again. The problem MAY be related to download speed; e.g. timing, and therefore could occur with
smaller AD Summary Lists over 56 kb modem connections. If you still experience the problem; call us at 800-952-8844.

Fix Norton AD Blocking (Pop-up Blocking). Norton Security Options

01/30/04
The Symantec (Norton) Technical Staff has provided an explanation for the recent problem of "Missing Links".
We, as you know, are in the AD (Airworthiness Directive) business, and the use of the letters "ad" triggers their Advertisement "Pop-up" blocking.
The near-term fix can now be changed form turning off the Norton Internet Security System to ONLY turning off the Ad Blocking feature.
The Symantec (Norton) Technical Staff is working on a permanent and more user transparent fix to the issue.
These issues are not affected by the use of the Antivirus System.

The "Missing Links" problem while using Norton Internet Security has now been reproduced consistently.
We know what is happening, however, no one at Norton seems to know why !!
For the moment, the solution is still the same: "Disable" only the top function on the Norton Control Panel (Internet Security).
Then Refresh or Reload the page. You may have to clear cache to avoid simply reloading the Page stored on your computer.
Netscape and MS-IE treat cache differently. If you don't know how to clear cache or in the case of MS-IE, delete temporary Internet files,
Call us at 800-952-8844.

The problems with the Norton Internet Security Package continue. Since we have not heard of the "Missing Links" problem in several months, we assume that current versions of the Norton Package have that problem fixed. We now have one case of the RTF problem with a recent release of the Norton Package. The problem arises when you start the download of an RTF (AD or other file that we provide in RTF to reduce the file size). Your Browser will act like the download is done, but display a blank white screen. The solution is the same as that for the earlier problem -- turn off ONLY the Internet Security portion of Norton, leaving the Virus Protection in place. The user who encountered this problem was using Windows ME and AOL, either of which could have contributed to the problem.
We have made Norton aware of the issue.

We have now see two cases of altered data as the result of the installation of Internet Security Programs. The first occurred several months ago and was traced to a Norton product that changed the ".RTF" file extensions to ".GIF". The fix required changing a setting (switch) in the Software. We are aware of only three cases of this problem and have not seen it in recent months. That suggests that Norton has dealt with the issue successfully.

Recently we have had two reports of "missing links" in HTML pages. We believe the problem has been traced to the Norton Internet Security Software.
See the following excerpt from a Subscriber:

"... so we erased the Norton Internet Security system off the computer and were able to get the links.
We installed just a Norton Antivirus system and still have the links so I think we will leave things at this stage.
We had looked in the Internet Security system for something to change but didn't find anything that seemed
to be related but whatever it was it's gone now."

We will try to get a detailed answer from Norton.
